Burnt Wires

Well I came across another burnt up wire today.  This was to a dryer it appears durning construction the electrician didn’t tighten the terminal down enough and over time it became loose.   When this happens corrosion will build up and over time this will cause more resistance and this causes heat, then you end up with burnt and damaged wires at the least. In this case it burnt out the side of the plug and caused damage to the box as well the box did its job it contained the fire damage but it was no longer usable.

So to fix this- the wire had allot of damage I cut in a new box below this old one because the conductors fed up from below this gave me more length to work with and I was able to cut out all of the damaged conductors to get to clean copper and good insulation. Then I installed the new plug (in this case we up graded to a 4 wire dryer plug and we replaced to dryer cord as well) we then proceeded to test the plug then the machine everything was back to normal and working correctly.

If you look close you can also see the damage to the box the top right its sagging down and no longer has the correct protection to use for Electrical at all.

Meter/Panel Upgrade

Here’s the before and after photos of a panel we just completed:

Notice how much cleaner it looks, and safer this is. All of our work is inspected and approved by local jurisdiction.

This Home had a short in the meter they were dropping one of the legs so they lost their 220 and were without their dryer and their A/C we got on this fast and got their power up and going restoring their comfort in their home and life.

Here’s a meter that needed an upgrade. This old meter has a few problems. It was only designed for about 60 to 70 amps and the new meters we install are a minimum of 100 amps. The new meters have the ever important disconnect to not only turn off the power to your home in an emergency but to provide additional protection from overloads shorts etc.

On top of all that, the old meter has no grounding protection. We added the required grounding and went above and beyond whenever possible. There was also the clearance issue with the overhead wires/conductors. We made sure they are at the right height. We did this using what is called a “mast” or a “riser” going through and above the roof and when required supports back for the load.

Here is the box we cleaned up and replaced.

To provide additional wiring, sometimes we need to cut a hole into the wall. If we are just replacing the panel then most of the time there are no cut outs/repairs.

Safety; Keeping it clean and clear

Lets talk safety again, can you see a problem in these photos?

IMG_0389 IMG_0388The problem is there is no clearance for the Electricians to work on the meter.   What happens if the meter starts sparking?  Oh my goodness, then you have your AC unit on fire also!  Plus the heat from the AC unit going can heat up the meter.   Electricians need room to work.  There is actually code on this, from the NEC Code Book –  “For equipment serving between 120 volts and 250 volts, the regulations require a minimum of three feet of clearance. The width of the working space in front shall be 30 inches minimum or width of the equipment. The OSHA standard (29 CFR1910.305 (d)) requires a dead front on electrical panel boards.”

imagesThere are many times Electricians have to wade through boxes or storage containers or outside equipment such as wheelbarrows, lawn mowers, hoses, etc to get to the panel/meter or box they are working on, which causes an unsafe environment for them.  Also, again, if there is sparking coming from the panel or meter or electrical box and it sparks and hits a cardboard box in your storage area, then you have bigger problems then a light or outlet not working.

Hiring the right Electrical Company/Electrician

We talk a lot about “make sure you hire a licensed and insured electrical company to do your work”   But do you know how or what to look for?

Why should I pay more money to hire a licensed Electrician than an unlicensed Electrician?  All Electricians- Master and  Journeyman – Have a minimum of 4 years schooling and on the job training and then they have to qualify and test with the state before the board approves them to be a licensed journeyman then another 3 years minimum before they can test to be a Master Electrician.

 

They are all required 16 hours continuing Ed every two years (state law)  to renew their licenses.  Continuing Ed goes over the new laws and new requirements.  Electrical Contractors have to have an additional 8 hours to renew their licenses.    This is to keep the workers up to date on everything.  NEC (National Electrical Code) also puts out an expensive book every two years that electricians have to go by.  OSHA has requirements that Electricians have to abide by also.  So, if you have a licensed Electrician, vs an unlicensed electrician,  more than likely they are up to date on all the continuing laws and regulations.  Really, who would you rather have working on your home?  You can ask to see their licenses, it is required that they carry it on them. You can look on the state website DOPL to check if their licensing is current also. Its fast and easy to check.

Why should I make sure my Electrician has insurance coverage?   Insurance coverage for contractors covers both the electrician and the homeowner.

How can I know my Electrician has the right experience:   Talk to your Electrician to see what work they have done in the past.  This will help you know if they are able to do the work you need.  Also talk to friends and neighbors about their experiences and check out reviews online.

Make sure your Electrician listens to what you need and want and what your concerns are:  Make sure they know what your problem is and they are addressing the right problem.

Remember, it might feel like you are saving money to do the work yourself, but we get lots of calls that start out with “I was just doing ** and now I have no electricity in my home.”   Electricians have to go to school to learn what they do professionally, you wouldn’t go to your next door neighbor and ask them to put your braces on, right?

Service – Before and After Pictures part 2

We are going to do some more pictures of what you don’t want and some before and after pictures!

This was an interesting one it was originally 2 meters then someone had joined the two of them into one but it didn’t work there were problems and it wasn’t safe or legal. So the owner asked us to get it changed out and repaired and as you can see its now safe and correct.

We schedule the service changes the best we can but we always have a generator on hand and we make sure that you get power back up that day a normal outage for upgrade runs about 6 to 8 hours we don’t leave until your power is back up and your happy.

We can do Emergency upgrades as well. We worked into the evening to get this one done. We do everything possible to fulfill our commitments.

When we Upgrade these services we always install new grounding and they are always a complete working system when we are done.

 

 

Before & after – do you see the old wires all messy, and then the new service all clean and nice.

This home owner had just purchased this home a very nice couple.  They wanted to start the improvements on this home too get it updated the existing service was only a 60amp thats what you have with these single meters. So we upgraded to the new 100amp meter base and installed and new panel inside as well as replaced the feeder wires between them it turned out very nice they where happy and on there way to getting the whole house upgraded.IMG_0459
